In this episode of Masters of mmhmm, voice actor and keynote speaker Joshua Seth shares his transition from big stages to small screens, and how he now utilizes the best of both worlds.

At the beginning of the pandemic, he was juggling several tools to present virtually. When mmhmm came along, he was relieved to simplify his presentations with a single tool.

He applies his worldview of minimalism to his presentations and says “when you have a powerful tool like mmhmm, less is more… The few elements you choose to use should be well thought out and executed.”

Joshua has 3 recommendations to people who want to improve their video presence:

  1. Stand and be aware of your posture. Joshua points out that it’s easy to be casual working from home, but your body language is a big part of the authority you want to convey.
  2. Be aware of your tone of voice. Joshua recommends doing vocal and breathing warm ups before your presentation so you sound like the best version of yourself. (Here’s a great place to start.)
  3. Invest in your tech tools. This is your professional presence, Joshua reminds us. You’re not going to go to an office and sit in a folding chair - spend money if it’s important to the quality of the work you’re doing. At a bare minimum, invest in good lights, a good mic, and a good standing desk.
